Abigail Washburn and the Song of the Traveling Daughter
Banjo Newsletter November, 2005

2005 may be the “Year of the Clawhammer Banjo,” thanks to Abigail Washburn’s emergence on the national scene. With open-backs representing the fastest growing segment of banjo sales, the timing of Abigail’s surfacing could not be more apropos. Abigail’s new album, Song of the Traveling Daughter, is an extraordinary debut effort and offers a new theater for the definition of old-time and its ever-expanding boundaries.

RockyGrass Report
Banjo Newsletter, November, 2004

RockyGrass takes place every year at the Planet Bluegrass Ranch in
Lyons, Colorado. Every year the lineup is consistently of the
highest caliber, and bands play for an exuberant and always sold-
out audience. Nestled at the foot of the Rockies, the festival
grounds are truly sublime, with giant red sandstone cliffs, huge
cottonwood shade trees, and the St. Vrain River rolling through
the festival grounds. This year’s line-up was the typical mixture of
traditional bluegrass, old-time, and new-acoustic superstars. Usually
we enjoy three of Colorado’s 300 sunny days a year, but this year’s
festival earned the nickname “SloppyGrass,” due to torrential
downpours throughout most of the festival. But any bluegrass
festival worth its salt has suffered a rainy year, and the rain certainly
did not put a damper on the activities, with thousands turning out
for the music.
